CSEN 1076 Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval

Course Information

Abstract

  • This course provides an introduction to the fields of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval (IR). In NLP, we study computing systems that can process, analyze, or understand human languages. The course will cover various NLP tasks, algorithms, and performance evaluation metrics. A focus is placed on statistical learning algorithms that can learn from annotated text corpora to automatically acquire the knowledge needed to perform the task. The course is also intended to prepare students to understand the underlying theories and algorithms of IR systems and to introduce the methodology for the design and evaluation of such systems. IR is one of the most important tasks in NLP where the goal is to search and retrieve information from large amount of unstructured data. Search engines are typical examples of IR systems.
